About Oshie

Today’s generation is not familiar with Oshie and Hagoita as their parents and grandparents were.
In ancient times, the Imperial ladies learned and trained in the three areas to ensure their upper class status. These three areas were flower arranging, Japanese tea ceremony and Oshie.
After the Edo era, when a talented individual created a Kabuki character on a Hagotita, Oshie became a favorite and popular craft of all Japanese women.
In the Shosoin Temple in Nara they have carefully stored a 1,700-year-old flower and bird design Oshie.
Recently, I had the great pleasure of repairing a very old Oshie from the beginning of the Meiji era. The Oshie was a detailed 8-panel screen. It was repaired once before in the Taisho era.
I am the third generation to have the honor of working on this beautiful piece of the art. Now it will be enjoyed by others for years to come.
The Oshie process is a very simple one: first, you trace the picture you wish to make on a cardboard. After you cut the cardboard, you cover with cotton and then fabric.
You vary the thickness of the cotton so after the pieces are assembled back to the original shape you have a 3-D effect. By using an old technique and a current design, I am creating “New Oshie.”
In Japan, this traditional craft is fading away. In a country of one-hundred-million population, there are less than 100 Oshie teachers and most of these teachers are in their eighties. I am the only Oshie teacher in the United States.
I hope to continue to teach the Japanese people from Japan, so they may pass down the value, tradition and beauty of Oshie for many generations to come.
I have over 20 Oshie students who have earned their certificates. Two of these students are now teaching in Japan. In the near future, I hope to publish an Oshie book in English and in Japanese.
In this online catalogue, I have chosen old tradition and new Oshie designs as well as designs from other countries. I hope that you will enjoy my artworks.
押絵について
雅押絵研究会米国支部 木原静玉
「押絵」といっても、羽子板を思い浮かべてくださる人も少なくなりましたが、その昔は、茶道、華道、押絵の三つが、宮中の女性の習い事の中心をなしていました。
押絵が一般化されたのは、ずっと後の江戸時代に、ある押絵師が歌舞伎役者を羽子板にほどこした頃からだといわれております。正倉院の北の倉には、何と千七百年も前の花鳥の押絵が保存されているそうです。
私が手がけた物では、明治時代に輸出向けにのみ作られたという八枚屏風の大名行列の「補修」で、大正時代にもう一人の方が、補修され、私が三代目の手がけ
人で、又これで何十年も生きてくれると思ったときは、複雑な肌寒さを感じました。
下絵を描いて切り離したものを型紙で作り、その上に綿をのせて、布でくるみ、立体感を出しながら組み合わせて、元の絵にするという、いたって簡単な作業ですが、古い技法で新感覚なものや、独自の作品を創作できるのは、やはり、押絵ならではの妙味かと思われます。
私のオリジナル「ニュー押絵」もそんなところから生まれました。
日本の押絵師は、もうご高齢で十年前で八十歳以上の方が百人足らずと言われており、正に風前の灯です。
アメリカでは私が唯一人で、在日本人や現地の二、三、四世の方々に少しでも押絵の存在や価値観を知っていただきたく、始めて二十年余りになりました。
お陰さまで、師範も二十人を越え、二人は現在日本でお教室を開き、活躍しております。
微力ながら、逆輸入とまでゆかなくても、少しずつでも発展してくれることを念じつつ、老体にムチ打って、まだまだ頑張りたいと意欲を燃やしております。
近い将来、日英語両語の押絵の本を出したいなどとおこがましい夢も燃やしております。このオンライン・カタログでは、伝統的なものと古い技法で現代感覚、また、国を越えた作品の可能性を強調しています。「伝統の良さ」を味わって頂けることを念じております。
About Kimekomi Doll
The history of Kimekomi is not quite as old as Oshie. In Kyoto in 1740s, a man named Tadashige Takahashi worked at the Kamo shrine making boxes from willow wood. He used the left over wood to make dolls.
These dolls became known as wood grain dolls. He would establish a pattern using the grain of the wood then place a piece of fabric over the pattern. The excess fabric would trimmed and tucked into the slit in the wood. This form of doll making became very popular and spread all over the country.
Now the bodies for the dolls are made from compressed sawdust and the heads, hands and faces are made by professional doll makers. Even a beginner will find this form of doll making easy and fun and the end result will be a beautiful Kimekomi doll.
The Kimekomi doll is very popular in the United States and Japan. They make excellent gift and are more reasonably prices when you make them yourself. A doll which you make by yourself is of better quality and is much more meaningful than a mass produced doll which is still very expensive.
Women from Japan enjoy American crafts such as tole painting and patchwork. Living in Japan, one tends to take for granted the beautiful Japanese crafts. It is when you are away from your country that one tends to see from a different viewpoint: the beautiful and traditional arts and craft home has to offer

木目込人形
木目込人形の歴史は押絵ほど古くはありませんが、千七百四十年頃、京の都の加茂神社に仕える高橋忠重という人が柳箱の余材で木彫りの人形を創り、木の目を生かして着衣をはり、溝に布端をきれいに押し込んだところから、木目込人形と名付けられ、大層人気を集め、人から人へと伝えられて、現在にまでも受け継がれています。
本体は、桐粉を型に入れ固めたもので、頭、手、足、顔など専門家によって考案、吟味されたものが、布も含めてセットで入っているので、初心者でも、熟達した作品に近いものが出来上がるので、アメリカでも多くの人々に親しみ、好まれています。
創って楽しく、贈り物としても喜ばれてます。手創りのひな人形や五月人形も格安で出来る上に、内職の人が造ったものと違い、綺麗に仕上がりがみられます。
アメリカに住む日本からの人達は、パッチワークやトールペイントなど、こちらの物を好まれるようですが、外国に出て、日本の文化を見直すともっと、日本の本来の良さに出遭えるのではないでしょうか。
憩いのひととき、優雅で華麗な人形をお部屋に飾り、故郷日本を偲ばれてはいかがでしょうか。
About Goen
Goen is a Japanese coin equal to five yen. It is also a Buddhist word which translated into English is the belief of cause and effect surrounding certain circumstances. These words sound the same but have two different meanings.
It is rare to find a country who make a coin with a hole in the center. That is only coin craft was created.
In Japan, it costs more than 5 yen to make the 5-yen coin. It is rumored the coin may be discontinued near future.

五円玉手芸
五円は御縁という掛け言葉とともに同音異義として使用されています。
御縁とは、もとを正せば仏教語で、「縁起」と言う語からきています。
この世のあるとあらゆる事象はすべてが縁によって起こると言うことであります。
俗には、「良縁」とか「袖すり合うも多少の縁」などと使われておりますが、現代語で表現すれば「条件」と訳すことができるでしょう。
五円玉のように、お金に穴があいているのも世界では稀なことから、このような手芸が考案されました。
その上、日本では現在、五円玉を一個作るのに五円以上もかかることから廃止説も出ております。近い将来、この姿が消える可能性も高いと言われています。
